New research reveals that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users buying such drugs should be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified rebound.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a intense return of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural management.
