Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a armed takeover in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.

This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.

His child, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on social media on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's ruling was the potential of Bolsonaro's move to embassies near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a background of organizing to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The court filing emphasizes that the United States embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is positioned around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist American leader President Trump, causing him to implement a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being detained in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will experience a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised government buildings in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
