European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the action was “another example” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
